How to have a greener Valentine’s Day?

It’s the day to celebrate love again! Valentine’s Day is widely celebrated with gifts, flowers and food, which shows a big reflection of a consumerist society. We have learnt the custom to shower our loved ones with (unnecessary) stuffed animals or cut flowers, all of which take some responsibility for their negative environmental impacts. Do you know that on February 14 alone, there is about 9 million kilograms of CO2 extra released to the environment?

As we learn the custom to gift the others with material items, we can learn the custom to make it more sustainable and greener. Check out some easy-to-follow ideas for you!

How about flower plants that can live for long?

  • Make a video, write a song or a poem! This will be truly a unique gift, cost nothing (but your time) and barely harms the environment.

  • Use your DIY skill to create handmade gifts, for example a card from recycled paper, a stuffed animal from old clothes and pillow and so many more

  • Give plants of flowers, not cut flowers, as they can continue living for life, not turning dead after a few days of beauty (you obviously want your love to continue forever? 😊)

  • Make confetti from fallen leaves instead of buying ready-made ones from gift stores, say no to balloons, even biodegradable ones!

It is without doubt that we can celebrate Valentine’s Day at barely any cost to the environment. Use your imagination, look around and be creative! You can definitely surprise your loved ones with a unique Valentine’s Day this year and save the world at the same time!
